ARG Circuit Series Championship 20k: Round 1 Alex Decolator (Mermails) vs. Tyler Benard (Infernity)

Here we are for our second day in Cleveland for our first day of the ARG Circuit Series Championship 20k!  We're kicking off Round 1 here with a great matchup between explosive combo decks.  Alex Decolator is piloting the Watery Mermails while Tyler Benard is using the fiendish Infernity.  We're about to see which combo deck will escape Round 1 undefeated!


Alex wins the die roll and decides to go first.  He sets one monster and two back row and passes to Tyler.

Tyler starts off with an Upstart Goblin.  Next, he activates Reinforcement of the Army for Armageddon Knight which is then Normal Summoned to send Stygian Street Patrol to the grave.  He then sets five to his back row and passes the turn.

9000 (Alex) - 8000 (Tyler)

Alex starts by flipping up Mermail Abysslinde.  Next he Normal Summons another Mermail Abysslinde.  Abysslinde attacks over Armageddon Knight then Linde connects directly.

9000 (Alex) - 6400 (Tyler)

Tyler draws for turn and passes without a play, his back row locking him out from playing spells or traps.

Alex Normal Summons Genex Controller and attacks with the team.  He passes after. 

9000 (Alex) - 2000 (Tyler)

Tyler draws and passes.

Alex starts his turn by Xyz Summoning Mechquipped Angineer with Genex Controller and Abysslinde.  Tyler responds with a Bottomless Trap Hole, but Alex chains the effect to put it into defense.  Next, he Normal Summons Mermail Abysspike, discarding Atlantean Dragoons.  Tyler doesn’t have any other play and scoops it up as we go to Game 2.

Unable to get any plays after an initial Armageddon Knight, Tyler flounders against a constant stream of Mermail beats!


Game 2

Tyler elects to go first for Game 2, hoping to set up a powerful board before Alex has a chance to respond.  He starts with a Reinforcement of the Army to search out Dark Grepher which is then Normal Summoned.  He then activates the effect, discarding Infernity Necromancer to send Infernity Archfiend to the grave.  He sets one to his back row and passes.

Alex draws for turn and starts off by discarding Mermail Abyssmegalo to Mermail Abyssteus.  Tyler responds with a Solemn Warning to shut down the play.  Alex then Soul Charges for both Mermails, enabling a Rank 7 Xyz play.  He chooses to Xyz Summon Mermail Abyssgaios, sets one to his back row and passes.

6000 (Alex) - 6000 (Tyler)

Tyler begins with a Normal Summon of Summoner Monk.  He then activates the effect of Grepher to discard Stygian Street Patrol and send another Stygian Street Patrol to the grave.  Grepher and Summoner monk are then overlaid to Xyz Summon Evilswarm Exciton Knight, whose effect is then activated, but Alex responds with the effect of Abyssgaios.  Tyler then uses Stygian to Special Summon Necromancer from his hand and brings back Archfiend to search another copy of Archfiend.  The second Stygian Special Summons the searched Archfiend as he searches out Infernity Launcher.  He overlays both Archfiends for Diamond Dire Wolf which destroys Abyssgaios.  Infernity Launcher is then activated and used on Archfiend and Necromancer, while Archfiend searches out Barrier.  Necromancer brings back another Archfiend and searches Infernity Break.  Tyler then passes with an empty hand and Barrier and Break in his backrow.  Before Tyler’s End Phase, Alex stares at a hand of Mermail Abysspike and Genex Controller as he activates Abyss-sphere to bring out Abysslinde.  Abysslinde Special Summons Mermail Abyssleed to the field.  

Alex starts his turn with a Normal Summon of Genex Controller.  Tyler flips up the Infernity Break and Alex concedes, sending us to a deciding Game 3!


Game 3

Alex elects to go first Game 3.  He starts with an Upstart Goblin, then sets a monster and two to his back row

8000 (Alex) - 9000 (Tyler)

Tyler draws for turn.  After mulling it over, he activates Dark Hole and triggers Alex’s set Abysslinde, getting him an Abysspike.  Abysspike ditches Tidal, Dragon Ruler of Waterfalls to add Genex Undine to his hand.  Tyler then Normal Summons Stygian Street Patrol, followed up by an Instant Fusion.  Alex stops the play by flipping up Vanity’s Emptiness.  During Battle Phase, Stygian crashes into Abysspike and gets rid of Vanity’s.

8000 (Alex) - 8000 (Tyler)

Alex Normal Summons Genex Undine to send Atlantean Dragoons to the grave and add Genex Controller to his hand.  The Dragoons effect lets him then search out Atlantean Marksman.  He follows it up with a Soul Charge for four, bringing back Dragoons, Abysspike, Tidal, and Abysslinde.  Abysslinde and Genex Undine are used to Xyz Summon Mechquipped Angineer in attack, while Dragoons and Abysspike Xyz Summon Abyss Dweller to shut down Stygian.  He then flips up an Abyss-Sphere to Special Summon Abyssleed to Xyz Summon Mermail Abyssgaios.  He sets one to his back row and passes to Tyler.

4000 (Alex) - 8000 (Tyler)

Tyler draws to four cards in hand, staring down a devastating field.  He starts by using Reinforcement of the Army to search Dark Grepher which is then Normal Summoned.  Grepher discards Stygian to send a copy of Necromancer to the graveyard.  Once Necromancer hits the grave, Alex uses Dweller and detaches Dragoons, searching out Atlantean Heavy Infantry.  Tyler then attempts a Soul Charge on both of his Stygians which resolves.  Tyler then uses both Stygian to Xyz Summon Number 101: Silent Honor ARK in defense.  He attempts to use the effect on Abyssgaios, but Alex chains Abyssgaios to stop the steal.  Tyler passes the turn.  

4000 (Alex) - 6000 (Tyler)

Alex draws for turn and Normal Summons Genex Controller and swings with the team.  He flips up an Abyss-sphere and Tyler offers the handshake!


Alex is able to Soul Charge first in Game 3 and moves on to Round 2 undefeated!
