ARGCS Indianapolis: Round 6 Matt Menchaca (Shaddoll Artifacts) vs. James Frazier (Burning Abyss)

Our Round 6 gives us a match featuruing Matt Menchaca and his Shaddoll deck with a flavorful splash of Artifacts, while James Frazier is running Burning Abyss with plenty of tribute monsters in the Main Deck.  Both of these duelists have chosen to innovate on existing archetypes, but only one of them can (potentially) lock up a Top 16 spot with a win!


Game 1

 

James wins the die rolls and decides to go second.  Matt starts off by setting two backrow and passing the turn.

James draws for turn then Normal Summons Tour Guide from the Underworld, bringing out Graff, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss.  Once it hits the field, Matt activates Artifact Sanctum to bring out Artifact Moralltach and destroy Tour Guide from the Underworld.   He sets two backrow, activates Supply Squad, and passes the turn.

Matt Normal Summons Shaddoll Dragon.  Battle Phase, Moralltach runs over Graff, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss to bring out Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss and draw James a card.  He sets two cards before passing the turn.

8000 (Matt) - 6900 (James)

James uses Upstart Goblin to dig a card deeper.  He then tributes Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss for Vanity's Fiend.  During Battle Phase, Vanity's Fiend tries to run over Shaddoll Dragon but Matt has Compulsory Evacuation Device.  During the End Phase James adds Tour Guide from the Underworld to his hand with the effect of Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss.

9000 (Matt) - 6900 (James)

Matt connects directly with both of his monsters.  Main Phase 2 he sets a backrow and passes the turn.

9000 (Matt) - 2900 (James)

James draws for turn then summons Tour Guide from the Underworld to bring out Cir, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss.  When Cir, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss hits the field Matt responds with Artifact Sanctum to Special Summon Artifact Moralltach to destroy Tour Guide from the Underworld and let James draw a card.  He sets one card to his backrow and ends his turn.

Matt starts off his turn with a Sinister Shadow Games to send Shaddoll Hedgehog to the grave to add Shaddoll Squamata to his hand.  He Normal Summons Shaddoll Squamata, but James chains PWWB, discarding Graff, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss to return it to the top of the deck.  Graff, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss triggers and brings out Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss from the deck.  Matt then Xyz Summons for Number 61: Volcasaurus, which then attempts to destroy Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss, but James has Effect Veiler to stop the effect.  He then overlays for Gaia Shaddoll Dragon the Thunder Charger.  He goes on to banish Moralltach and Shaddoll Hedgehog to Special Summon Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning.  During Battle Phase, Gaia Shaddoll Dragon runs over Cir, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss which brings back Graff, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss and draws James a card.  Shaddoll Dragon runs over Graff, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss which summons Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss from the deck.  Black Luster Solider - Envoy of the Beginning then takes care of the two Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss.  Main Phase 2 he sets a backrow, and during the End Phase James adds Tour Guide from the Underworld to his hand with the effect of Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss.

9000 (Matt) - 1500 (James)

James kicks things off by banishing Effect Veiler and Tour Guide from the Underworld for his own Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning.  His Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning then banishes Matt's Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning.  He follows it up with a copy of The Monarchs Stormforth.  He then tributes Matt's Gaia Shaddoll Dragon for Vanity's Fiend.  Main Phase 2 he sets one backrow and ends.

8500 (Matt) - 1500 (James)

Matt sets a monster then passes.

James attempts to use Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning effect on Matt's set monster, but Matt responds with Sinister Shadow Games.  Trying to prevent a flip, James uses Compulsory Evacuation Device to return the set monster to his hand.  Sinister Shadow Games resolves and sends Shaddoll Squamata which sends Shaddoll Beast to draw Matt a card.  James Normal Summons Mathematician which sends another Mathematician to the grave.  Main Phase 2 he sets another backrow and ends his turn.

4600 (Matt) - 1500 (James)

Matt sets a monster and a backrow and ends his turn.  During the End Phase, James uses Mystical Space Typhoon on Matt's set Double Cyclone.

Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning banishes Matt's set Shaddoll Squamata then swings out.

700 (Matt) - 1500 (James)

Matt sees his next card and decides to move on to Game 2.


Game 2

 

Matt decides to go first for Game 2.  He Normal Summons Mathematician and sends Shaddoll Squamata which sends Shaddoll Falco to the grave.  Shaddoll Falco summons itself facedown.  He sets two backrow and passes.

James draws for turn and Normal Summons Tour Guide from the Underworld which brings out Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss.  In response to the summon, Matt activates Artifact Sanctum to bring out Artifact Moralltach which destroys Tour Guide from the Underworld.  He follows it up with an Mystical Space Typhoon on Matt's set Super Polymerization, which he flips up and activates to send Shaddoll Falco and Tour Guide from the Underworld to the grave to bring out El Shaddoll Winda.  Shaddoll Falco summons itself back facedown.  James sets one backrow and ends his turn.

Matt flips up Shaddoll Falco and brings out Shaddoll Squamata facedown.  Moralltach runs over Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss and the rest of his team connects directly.  He passes without another play.

8000 (Matt) - 3700 (James)

James sees his next card, and after pondering for a bit, scoops it up so we can move on to a deciding Game 3!


Game 3

 

James elects to go second for the deciding Game 3.

Matt leads off with a Foolish Burial, sending Shaddoll Squamata which sends Shaddoll Beast to the grave to draw him a card.  He sets a monster and a backrow then passes the turn.

James uses a Foolish Burial of his own to send Graff, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss to the grave and bring out Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss in defense.  He then Normal Summons Cir, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss.  He Xyz Summons for Ghostrick Alucard which is met with a Compulsory Evacuation Device.  Cir, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss brings out Graff, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss and he Special Summons Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss to Xyz Summon Ghostrick Alucard again.  Ghostrick Alucard destroys Shaddoll Hedgehog to add Shaddoll Dragon to his hand.  He sets two backrow and passes his turn.

6200 (Matt) - 8000 (James)

Matt Normal Summons Shaddoll Dragon and attacks over Ghostrick Alucard.  He passes without another play while James adds Tour Guide from the Underworld to this hand with Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss.

6200 (Matt) - 7900 (James)

James Normal Summons Tour Guide from the Underworld and brings out Cir, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss.  He overlays them both for Number 17: Leviathan Shaddoll Dragon, which boosts itself to 2500 ATK.  He runs over Shaddoll Dragon, sets a backrow and passes.

5600 (Matt) - 7900 (James)

Matt sets a monster then flips up Sinister Shadow Games, flipping up the newly set Shaddoll Hedgehog while sending Shaddoll Beast to the grave to draw him a card after searching out Shaddoll Fusion.  Matt uses Shaddoll Fusion but James flips up Vanity's Emptiness.

James draws, runs over Shaddoll Hedgehog, then ends his turn.

Matt sets a monster then ends his turn.

James flips up his set The Monarchs Stormforth to tribute Matt's set Shaddoll Dragon for Vanity's Fiend.  Both connect and James passes the turn.

700 (Matt) - 7900 (James)

Matt sees his last card and offers the handshake in concession.


James Frazier takes Burning Abyss to a stellar 6-0 record!  This puts him at almost a lock for Top 16.
