Bo Tang’s ARG Provincial Championship

Hello everyone! This past weekend, I attended the ARG Provincial Championship (hosted by YOCC) in Mississauga, Ontario. It was Family Day weekend in BC, so I travelled back to Toronto to visit my family, and my Yugi-family as well. As always, I was having a great time meeting with friends, while enjoying playing the game.

What’s YOCC?

Many of you may be wondering, “What is the YOCC?” Well, YOCC stands for Yugioh Open Cash Championship. It is the event that mainly focuses on improving the GTA (Greater Toronto Area) Yugioh community and experience. What makes the YOCC attractive and professional is the competitive environment as well as the live stream. All the YOCC events are live streamed, with professional commentators such as David Bui (head commentator), Rob Cedar, Wuphlez, etc.

There are a few events that were successfully run in the past 8 months. Now, we are having Season 2 Preliminaries (one event per month), and there will be a seasonal championship coming in April to sum up the whole season. So this coming spring is getting more exciting for the GTA community. This makes the YOCC undoubtedly the best unofficial event you can ever ask for in the GTA.

Note that the YOCC event organizer is Noah Long, a pro and famous Canadian Magic player. He organizes these events as a hobby, and his intention is to build a better Yugioh community for the GTA, with better prize pools, living by the motto, “More players, more prizes!”

Come out, bring your friends, and together, we can create something big! So if you are interested in attending these events, you should check this site out:

Tournament Report

Round 1 vs Heroes

This is the feature match. You can watch it here

Game 1: I went first and ended up with Mathematician and 3 backrow. My opponent summoned Armageddon Knight and then sent a Shaddoll Dragon to grave. Unfortunately, Dragon targeted my set Artifact Sanctum. The game did not last long after I successfully resolved El Shaddoll Fusio.

Game 2: My opponent went first and activated Hero Lives to special summon Shadow Mist. Shadow Mist then got him a Mask Change. He ended his turn with Shadow Mist, a set monster and a set Mask Change. I summoned Mathematician and activated the effect just to force him to make Dark Law. I set Artifact Sanctum, Ignition and Book of Moon afterwards. When my opponent tried to attack my monster, I simply activated Sanctum to summon Moralltach and then popped Dark Law, leading to an easy victory.

Round 2 vs Burning Abyss

Game 1: I OTKed him in turn 3 with BLS, Snatch Steal and El Shaddoll Fusion.

Game 2: My opponent made a Dante and then milled something along with Dark Hole. Later in the game, he milled Raigeki too! I was pretty confident so that I made Leo, Yazi and won the game easily.

Round 3 vs Burning Abyss

Game 1: My opponent had an all monster hand. He conceded after I made Winda.

Game 2: The whole game was under my control but everything changed after he dropped a Vanity’s Fiend in the mid game. I tried my best to thin my deck and hoped to draw a Breakthrough Skill. At the end, I lost without seeing my BTS, even after seeing 30/40 cards of my deck.

Game 3: I opened with Shaddoll Fusion, Mystical Space Typhoon, Shaddoll Beast, Mathematician and BTS (finally!). I won the game after he made Dante.

Round 4 vs Qliphort

Game 1: I started the game with a Winda, set Falco, Double Cyclone and El Shaddoll Fusion. My opponent was lucky enough to hit my Double Cyclone with Night Beam. I lost the game in a few turns because I was not able to fightback.

Game 2: I won the game by simply attacking with my Fire and Ice Hand.

Game 3: His hand was really bad, so my Hands were good enough to knock him out of the game.

Round 5 vs Qliphort

Unfortunately, I had to face my brother Joe. So we decided to intentional draw as soon as we sat down.

Round 6 vs Burning Abyss

This is the feature match. You can watch it here

Game 1: I hit his set Fire Lake with Ignition. Although he can’t attack, he made Virgil and 2 Dante to keep pressure on the field. I was lucky enough to have Shaddoll fusion, and then made BLS, Construct, Leo, and Lyla to steal the game.

Game 2: I opened with El Shaddoll Fusion and 2 Shaddoll Fusion. I decided to set 1 El Shaddoll Fusion and 1 Shaddoll Fusion just bait out his back row removal (note that I knew he only played 1 Fire Lake and figured that he would side it out). At one point, I tried to chain El Shaddoll Fusion, but the fusion material got stolen because he chained Enemy Controller. Since I did not have enough monsters to fusion with, he got the chance to see my whole hand. This was a huge advantage because he could play the game accordingly. However, he got caught by my set Shaddoll Fusion and quickly conceded.

Round 7 vs Qliphort

This is the feature match. You can watch it here

Game 1: Tempo control is the key to this matchup. I had Sanctum to get rid of his monster and made a push afterwards.

Game 2: He went first and got a pretty good hand. The game ended soon.

Game 3: I was lucky enough to make a push with Moralltach, Squamata and Shaddoll Core early. Later, a timely Fairy Wind just killed my opponent.

Top 16 vs Burning Abyss

This is the feature match. You can watch it here

Game 1: I knew he is playing BA before the match, so I made Yazi and then set 3 backrow. My opponent started with 2 special summoned BA monsters. I thought for a moment and then decided to use my Ignition to pop my set Artifact Scythe. However, both my Yazi and Scythe got hit by Raigeki. I topped deck a BLS and tried to OTK my opponent with BLS, Moralltach and Squamata. But things did not go that well. The OTK was stopped by Enemy Controller. I lost the game afterwards.

Game 2: I made Yazi again, along with 2 set Vanity’s Emptiness. I flipped VE after the second special summoned BA monster hit the board. A timely Mystical Space Typhoon (his only S/T card in his opening hand) poped my second set Vanity’s. Later, he was lucky enough to mill the useful BA monsters to the grave. After resolving every single BA monster effects, he killed me with Giga Brilliant and 3 Dante.

Well, this is Yugioh. Sometimes you worked so hard, but still lost to some uncontrollable factors.
