Cardfight!! Vanguard Article Writing Competition: Bring forth the Cross Rides!

Hello there, my names Ashlee and I am from England. I am here to write about the future of Cardfight!! Vanguard’s TCG Meta and what impact the Cross Rides in Set 5 Awakening of Twin Blades will make. More Specifically Dragonic Overlord- The End and Majesty Lord Blaster.

The Current Format

As we all know from recent Regionals, Nationals and World Championships, Gold Paladin is the current top deck to play in the current format. Currently we in the TCG have access to Sets 1-4 and 6-7 (The latter being where Gold Paladins hail from) as well as Extra Boosters 2 and 3.

Now currently we have three different builds of Gold Paladins of which are played, Ezel-Garmore, Spectral Duke Dragon (SDD) and Pellinore. Each of these decks has their own play style. Ezel-Garmore focuses mainly on swarming the field with units and hitting hard forcing your opponent to use resources to guard your attacks. SDD builds revolve around gaining advantage off of your ride chain (Vortimer) and then using that advantage to later on retire 3 units to perform a second Drive Check. Pellinore however, uses units to gain advantage when they are called from your deck, such as White Hare in The Moon’s Shadow, Pellinore. This cards skill is when called from the deck, you can discard one to Ride it. So let’s say you have called it in the battle phase through Player of The Holy Bow, Vivianne, and you have already performed your drive check, you will get to perform another drive check that turn.

As you can probably tell, these decks are very powerful and it is easy to see why they are the number one deck in our current Metagame. However, with the release of Set 5 approaching us on the 23rd February 2013, we are going to have access to two new tier one decks that have taken japan by storm. These are the Kagero Deck Dragonic Overlord- The End and the Royal Paladin Deck Majesty Lord Blaster.

Dragonic Overlord- The End

First off, let’s talk about Dragonic Overlord- The End as a card. Its skill reads:

“[CONT](VC/RC):If have a non Kagero vanguard or rear-guard, this unit gets Power-2000.
[CONT](VC):If you have a unit named "Dragonic Overlord" in your soul, this unit gets Power+2000.
[AUTO](VC):[Counter Blast (2) & Choose a "Dragonic Overlord The End" from your hand, and discard it.] When this unit's attack hits, you may pay the cost. If you do, stand this unit.

This is a very powerful card and here is why. This card already has 11000 power on its own. With a Dragonic Overlord in the soul this becomes 13000! This is even during your opponents’ turn, so if your opponent wants to make you guard for 10000 or more, they have to be hitting you for 23000 power. Then there’s the real power of this card in its third skill. This card will allow you to drive check twice when it hits, meaning you gain another 2 cards to your hand, and a second chance to check for Triggers. Meaning that turn you have had the opportunity to reveal 4 triggers to your opponent, although this is unlikely, that is an astronomical amount. This makes players opposing this deck constantly fear the skill of this card and force them to use resources in their hand or on the field just so this skill doesn’t go off. However, eventually they run out of these resources and that’s why this deck is so powerful, just because it keeps pushing and using your opponents’ resources whilst you gain yours.

Majesty Lord Blaster

The second deck to talk about is, Majesty Lord Blaster. This deck is kind of like a hybrid deck as it uses a Shadow Paladin card to make it work, in the form of, Blaster Dark. Now blaster dark is similar to what blaster blade is, not as good, but similar. But the real power is in Majesty Lord Blaster himself. His skill reads:

[CONT](VC):If you have a card named "Blaster Blade", and a card named “Blaster Dark" in your soul, this unit gets Power +2000 and Critical +1.
[AUTO](VC):[Choose a unit named "Blaster Blade", and a unit named "Blaster Dark" from your (RC), and put them into your soul] When this unit attacks, you may pay the cost. If you do, this unit gets Power +10000 until end of the Battle.

So let’s go into this in more detail. As you can see this is where Blaster Dark truly fits into the deck. First and foremost this card when having both Blaster Dark and Blaster Blade in the soul, will become 12000 permanently and will also gain a second Critical (The amount of damage your opponent takes when a unit hits) meaning this card will nearly always be attacking for 20000 when it has an 8000 boost behind it, but if you do let its attack hit, you will also be taking 2 damage. This is devastating to players, as critical triggers effect the game a lot, there is now a Unit that does it all on its own, meaning if you reveal a critical trigger with a drive check and you have this unit with the requirements in soul, you will be taking 3 damage, Ouch.
Then there’s its second skill. So obviously you don’t want to have to ride into Blaster Blade then Blaster Dark (Or vice versa) and then finally into Majesty Lord Blaster. So this is where that problem is solved, by merely having Majesty as your Vanguard and the other two Blasters as your Rear Guards you can put both Blasters straight into your soul when Majesty attacks and give it an extra 10000 power! But it doesn’t just stop there, Majestys’ first skill will then trigger, giving it and extra 2000 power and another critical! Meaning this card is attacking for 22000 with 2 critical without boost! That’s astronomical.

Again, like with Dragonic Overlord- The End, this deck uses this to force your opponent to use their resources whilst you gain yours, and that’s why these decks are so good. They force your opponent to guard, or risk being overwhelmed. Eventually players do run out of resources, and playing grind games against these decks, it just doesn’t work.

As you can probably see, with the release of Set 5: Awakening of Twin Blades, the format will completely change in the way the top decks are, it will change the flow of the game.
