Hello Yugioh Community! I am back this week with a new Deck Brake-Down! I am going to be taking a look at YCS Atlanta Top 32 finisher Michael Smith-Grant’s Evols deck. I really like the Evol engine and ever since I read Evoltile Westlo I knew they would have potential. Anytime a deck that players didn’t see coming does well, I get excited. In this edition of the Deck Brake-Down, not only am I going to give it my own personal changes, but also adjust it to fit the new Forbidden and Limited List for March 1st, 2012.
Question of the Article: What deck that doesn’t see a lot of play do you think could do well at a YCS?
Don’t forget to answer the question of the article in the comments down below!
WHAT DO EVOLS DO!?
I want to start off briefly talking about what exactly this deck does to win. Evols utilize Evoltile monsters such as Westlo and Najasho to special summon copies of Evolsaur monsters from the deck who gain special effects when summoned by Evotile monsters. Once the Evolsaurs are summoned to the field you use their effects and then XYZ Summon with 2 level four dinosaurs ( Any Evolsaur monster in the deck) and just beat your opponent down with Evolsaur Laggia and Evolsaur Dolkka. This deck is similar to Gladiator Beast in the sense that when they are special summoned by another cards effect they gain a special ability. They have monsters that are similar to those of Gladiator Beast Bestiari ( Evolaur Diplo), Gladiator Beast Darius ( Evolsaur Vulcano), and even Gladiator Beast Samnite (Evolsaur Cerato). The deck is pretty powerful and with the combination of the spell card Evo-Force used on Evoltile Najasho, you can summon two copies of Evolsaur Vulcano, bring back a couple of Evolsuar monsters from the grave and make Laggia and Dolkka in one swift move.

THE MONSTERS
I am really satisfied with the monster line-up that Michael chose to run in his deck. The only card that I would take out after playing around with this deck is Gorz, Emissary of Darkness. With this deck I almost always have some sort of board presence and if I don’t have monsters on the board then I probably drew a bad hand. While Gorz does help with those bad hands, I think he will sit in my hand more often while I have a field rather than not. I try to fit this card into any deck I play, but in this particular deck there just needs to be more room for other cards.
I would defiantly add at least a couple copies of Maxx “C”. With Wind-Ups running around all over the place this can really be the only card that can stop them from just discarding everything out of your hand. Even if it means you draw into more of your Evolsuar monsters, which is a bad thing, it is better than not having a hand at all. I feel this card is almost mandatory no matter what deck you choose to wield this format.

THE SPELLS
His list of spells is probably the most solid part of his whole deck list. There are absolutely no changes I would make to it. Evo-Force is just an awesome card combined with Evoltile Najasho or even an Evoltile Westlo that’s already used his effect, it is one of the most effective ways to spam your field with Evolsaurs. Since Evoltile Najasho is a combo card and needs an Enemy Controller or an Evo-Force for his effect to really have an impact the two copies of Pot of Duality will really help with the consistency. I would like to fit a third copy of Mystical Space Typhoon in the deck , but with room being so tight it will probably just have to remain in the side deck.
THE TRAPS
This is where I have the most changes to the deck. First off because of the new Forbidden and Limited list we will have to take out the overpowered Trap Dustshoot. I would also cut the Shadow Imprisoning Mirror and Bottomless Traphole. While the main decked Shadow Mirror is a neat idea, I think that there are way too many Rescue Rabbit decks running rampant right now to have this liability in the deck. Bottomless Traphole is a great card; I just think there are better cards that this space can be used for. Torrential Tribute is always a great card to have set and catch the over-extending opponent unexpectedly, but in this deck I don’t like it. The reason for cutting Torrential Tribute is similar to why I cut Gorz out of the deck. This card relies on having a monster presence on the field and I would rather use this spot for some form of monster removal that won’t clear my own board.
There are a few trap cards that I would like to add into this deck and give it a little more protection. First off I would go ahead and max out of Fiendish Chain. There is a reason this card is one of the most expensive super rare of all time, (Right up there with Dark Strike Fighter for those who remember). It takes care of all three of the top tier decks: Wind-Ups, Inzektors, and Rescue Rabbit. It is a really powerful trap and must be included in this deck. Next, I would splash in a copy of Dimensional Prison. I really am just putting this card in over the Bottomless Traphole. It takes care of the same amount of problems, but is an okay card to draw after your opponent has activated Rescue Rabbit. It is an all around good card against most deck. Even against Inzektors it can take care of their Thunder Kings and Jurrac Guiba if they chose to run it that way. Dimensional Prison is just a better card in my opinion than Bottomless and should be used over it, at least until we do away with priority. Lastly, this deck is so field dependant cards like Dark Hole, Heavy Storm, and Torrential Tribute can be quite problematic so I want to add a copy of Starlight Road. Torrential Tribute is now at 2 so the chances of your opponent having this set go up a lot. Starlight Road is pretty reactionary, but I feel it’s a necessary choice in a deck like Evols.

Conclusion: Michael Smith-Grant was able to pilot his Evols deck all the way to the Top 32 of YCS Atlanta! Evols can really pack a punch and are a deck type I have been excited about for quite some time now. His deck was pretty solid, but there were a few changes I would make to the deck. With a new format starting I had to cut a card that joined the Forbidden List and Torrential Tribute going to 2 influenced my decision to add in a copy of Starlight road. I mainly worked on Michael’s trap line-up to make the deck as good as it can be in my opinion. Remember, the only way to know if the card choices are right for you is if you go and test them out yourself!
