This is going to be a short match folks! Here in Round 4 of ARGCS Las Vegas we have Anthony Eckroth's Evilswarm deck facing off against Joel Valenzuela's Gishki Hieratic deck. The Hieratic loop is extremely powerful when it is able to go off, but Ophion can single-handedly end games just by being summoned to the field. Anthony won the dice roll 6 to 4 so let's get into it!
Game 1
Anthony began by drawing for his turn before using Upstart Goblin, giving +1000 lifepoints to Joel before playing Evilswarm Castor and using its condition to summon Evilswarm Mandragora. He overlays for Evilswarm Ophion and uses its effect to search for Infestation Pandemic before setting 2 and ending his turn.
Anthony 8000, Joel 9000
Joel was immediately put into a very poor spot, but begins by normal summoning Gishki Abyss. When he tried to activate the effect so he could search his deck for a potential out, Anthony dropped Effect Veiler to shut him down. Joel set Royal Decree before ending his turn.
Anthony draws for his turn, he uses his Ophion to add yet another Infestation Pandemic before summoning Evilswarm Kerykeion and using its effect banish Mandragora from his graveyard to add and summon Castor back to the field before attacking over Gishki Abyss and attacking for 4100 damage. He overlayed the 2 Evilswarms into another Ophion before setting another card and ending.
Anthony 8000, Joel 3900
Joel drew for his turn and conceded the duel with literally no plays to make.
Evilswarm Ophion immediately locks down the board and keeps Joel from even being able to play a card. Having the Veiler to assure his victory only salts Joel's wounds even more. With the ability to go first, Joel has the ability to get his loop off and potentially seal the game before its even began.
Game 2
Joel began by setting double Mind Crush and a Royal Decree.
Anthony drew and summoned Evilswarm Castor. Before even being able to attempt the second normal summon, Joel activated Mind Crush and called Evilswarm Mandragora to get a peek at Anthony’s hand. There was no Mandragora... but there were 3 other Evilswarm Monsters of different names! Wattaildragon was taken away from Joel’s hand as payment for his bad call. The second mind crush however was activated and snagged the Evilswarm Kerykeion in Anthony’s hand before he normal summoned Evilswarm Heliotrope to attack for 3700 damage. He activated Upstart Goblin and then overlayed into an Ophion. Anthonty searched for Infection and set 2 before ending.
Anthony 8000, Joel 5300
Joel drew, and passed without having a play to make.
Anthony drew and summoned Castor and Heliotrope before Joel conceded the match.
Evilswarm Ophion completely shuts Joel Valenzuela out of the game! This only goes to show the power that floodgate cards possess and that every matchup should be considered when building a deck. Joel's deck had outs to Ophion but he couldn't get to them fast enough to make anything matter. Best of luck to both players in the coming matches as Anthony moves on undefeated and Joel moves on x-1.
