What’s going on readers? I hope everyone is getting ready and prepared for the upcoming YCS in Providence, Rhode Island! This article, I will be going into some detail and insight on what I thought was a very creative and interesting deck that I saw being played at this past weekend’s regional in Stratford, Connecticut. I would also like to congratulate Steffon Bizzell on another top 8 performance with his signature deck, Chaos Dragons! Another special congratulation goes out to Alter Reality Games on their successful regional this past weekend as well!
Since the release of the original machine structure deck with the ancient gears inside of them, those little pesky gadget monsters have been running around from format to format generating their own plus ones and being an annoyance to most players. I remember when I heard the gadgets were going to be in that structure deck, I went to Target the very next day and picked myself up 3 of them so I could build a gadget deck. Filled with removal cards like smashing ground, fissure, hammer shot, sakuretsu armor, widespread ruin and many more options! This was essentially the beginning stages of gadget decks due to the deck being brand new to the yugi-world. Some of you are thinking what is this article going to be about? You said you saw an interesting and creative deck? Well ladies and gents, the deck I saw this weekend, was indeed a gadget deck. But it was something I have not really seen before. I know this is going to seem disappointing, but I do not have the exact deck list since the player did not want to give it out but I ended up making my own version of the deck since I played a few games with it myself.
Around the time when the gadgets first came out, there were many different types of variants duelists tried to use them in. Examples being: gadget monarchs, oppression gadgets, and then the “5th” gadgets. The term 5th gadgets came from there being 3 of each color gadgets in your deck in a deck total of 45 cards. Hence the term “5th” because 1/5th of your deck was containing just the gadgets alone. Then backing those gadgets up being the removal for monsters or the other type of engine you used like Giant Rats and Neo-Spacian Grand Mole or splashing the monarchs inside your deck with Hydrogeddons to create even more advantage! But in the current dueling days, we have cards to utilize some potential gadgets never got to see back in the time when they first came out with cards like: Pot of Duality, The Machina Monsters, and even the XYZ monsters combined with Ultimate Offering! By gadgets getting their own kind of “toolbox” you could say with Pot of Duality, the Machinas, and XYZ monsters, they became quite the contender for a YCS event! Just look what dedicated gadget player Robbie Kohl did with them at YCS Indy! Going back to the idea of XYZ monsters, has anyone read Gear Gigant X???? In a gadget based deck you could abuse his power and create more hand advantage and cause yourself to get the full value out of your red, yellow, and green floaters.
With the XYZ monsters coming out, gadgets had the chance to have the chance to OTK with Ultimate Offering by spamming the board with black boarder monsters all from the start of a little gadget! But then with the Restricted list, Ultimate Offering found itself getting put to 1 and the chance of drawing it became real slim. But in a deck where you are thinning through your deck to draw your spell and trap cards, that 1 single copy of Ultimate Offering could end up in your hand rather quickly. When I was watching this duelist play during the regional, I noticed him spamming gadgets on the field in one turn without using Ultimate Offering, but it’s Spell like version. Double Summon. I know duelists have been trying this card before but I have never really seen this card in any kind of action in tournament play. So essentially, this card acts as a pseudo Ultimate Offering and creates advantage through your first gadget. Think of this: Your opening hand contains a Green Gadget and a Double Summon. You summon your gadget, search its colorful friend, summon the next one due to your spell card, and search your next colorful friend, XYZ into Gear Gigant X, then search your deck for Machina Gearframe. Sounds pretty neat right? When I heard of this, I'll be honest and say I didn’t think it was that overpowering but then I decided to play the deck and see what it can do. And I must say, just with 1 gadget and Double Summon it creates a tempo for your game that should put you way ahead of your opponent and give you field and hand control. Here is the decklist I created based on what I saw the deck doing during gamestate and how my playstyle is. I give you, the 5th gadget deck:

Monsters: 21
3x Green Gadget
3x Red Gadget

There you have it, my own 45 card Gadget deck. 45 cards you say?????? Isn’t that too much? I explained earlier, based on the searching and deck thinning this deck gives you, it does not feel like that many cards at all. The fact you can summon a plus 1 every turn or even summon more than one per turn due to your Double Summon or even your Ultimate Offering. The deck also has the ability to spam XYZ monsters like I mentioned earlier and can create OTK potential without the powerful spell card Limiter Removal. I chose to cut Limter Removal from my deck because there were situations where I would raw it and chose to make an XYZ monster that benefited me during the present game state. You can play the Limiter Removal yourself if you wish, but like I said, this version of the deck was made for my own playstyle. Also during my testing with the deck, I have summoned multiple Shock Masters and establishing a “Shock Lock” on my opponent. I hope you all enjoyed this article about the new stage of the 5th gadget deck I saw this past weekend and don’t be afraid to try it out for yourself! I know my build is not the greatest, but see if you like it! I hope everyone can make it out to YCS Providence next weekend and be sure to check out Alter Reality Games for all your dueling needs! Until next time, Play Hard or Go Home!
