The Deck Doctor is In!

What’s up boys and girls, it’s T-Time! I just got my MD at the ARG State and I figured I would start operation on 2 decks today. If you want to see your deck here in a Deck Doctor article, please submit it to deckdoctor@alterealitygames.com. Please make sure to send me a little description of the deck and make sure that you use as few acronyms as possible. Try to write out the names as if you were writing out a decklist, it just makes it easier for me. Also, while DN screen shots are easier for you, it is harder for me to write it up and is often more difficult to see the deck’s symmetry. Maybe I’m just old school, but regardless, deck lists are how I see things better. The first deck I will be looking at today is J.J Banya’s Macro Hero deck.

Monsters: 12
1x Elemental Hero Stratos
3x Elemental Hero Neos Alius
2x DD Warrior Lady
3x Doomcaliber Knight
1x Snowman Eater
2x Thunder King- Rai Oh
Spells: 20
1x Dark Hole
3x E-Emergency Call
2x Forbidden Lance
3x Gemini Spark
1x Heavy Storm
1x Monster Reborn
2x Mystical Space Typhoon
3x Parallel World Fusion
3x Pot of Duality
1x Reinforcement of the Army
Traps: 8
3x Macros Cosmos
2x Fiendish Chain
1x Solemn Judgment
2x Solemn Warning

Extra Deck: 15
1x Elemental Hero Absolute Zero
1x Elemental Hero Gaia
1x Elemental Hero Great Tornado
1x Elemental Hero Nova Master
3x Elemental Hero the Shining
1x Utopia
2x Blade Armor Ninja
1x Utopia Ray
2x Maestroke the Symphony Djinn
1x Photon Papilloperative
1x Steelswarm Roach

So from what I’m noticing, it runs more like a Stun deck than a Hero deck. There is also only the use of Parallel World Fusion with the only means of removing monsters from play being Macro Cosmos and DD Warrior Lady. There is a difference between reaping benefits and being completely reliant on Macro Cosmos, and the deck is doing the latter. Also, having Thunder King on the field with so many searchers seems a little redundant. Just summoning Thunder King stops 8 cards in your deck. Also, if you are counting on Macro Comsos being up, you can’t tribute him for his second effect anyways.

I cut Thunder King right off fo the bat. Next, I cut Doomcaliber Knight because I wanted to include Tour Guide from the Underworld and the two don’t tend to mesh well. I added Sangan, because what’s Tour Guide without Sangan. Then I added another Snowman Eater for an additional target. Sangan can search Snowman, DD Warrior Lady, and Tour Guide now, which makes it worth playing. Macro Cosmos will not always be on the field, so its good to have him there. Also, adding the other Snowman Eater allows you to have another lv 3 on the field for when you XYZ. Having Macro Cosmos on the field is a benefit to playing Tour Guide for multiple reasons. First playing the Guide gives you easy access to Leviair. Outside of just bringing back monsters removed by Macro, it also turns DD Warrior Lady into recurring removal. Also, your opponent cannot Effect Veiler or Maxx “C” the Tour Guide with Macro face up. Tour Guide is too good right now. It’s your own little tool box that can summon a 3000 beat stick, 2100 def wall of removal, and anything in between. Though Tour Guide is a dark, don’t forget that most of her XYZ friends are not, so they make great fusion material later.

For the spells, I decided to cut a Parallel World Fusion because though novel, it is situational. I then cut back the Pot of Dualities to 2 since you are playing Tour Guide now. I then added 2 Miracle Fusions, since Macro won’t be up all of the time. Also, it feeds Parallel World Fusion until you do get your macro going. The trap lineup seemed fine, but the Fiendish Chains are more useful as Bottomless Trap Holes based on the meta. They both handle Wind-Up Carrier Zenmaighty and Fiendish Chain is better against Inzektors, but then again, you are main decking Macro Cosmos, so it is hard to lose that matchup anyways. Bottomless is more efficient against almost every other deck, dealing with Grapha, The Shining, and most importantly Light Pulsar Dragon. You will be happy you made the switch.

Finally, I tweaked the extra deck to make room for the Rank 3 monsters, but outside of that, I didn’t do much to it. It is still as versatile as ever. Hopefully these changes were useful! Here is the deck.

Monsters: 12
1x Elemental Hero Stratos
3x Elemental Hero Neos Alius

The next deck I will be looking at is Isabella Martinez’s Gravekeeper Deck.

Montsers: 14
3 Gravekeeper's Recruiter
3 Gravekeeper's Descendant
3 Gravekeeper's Commandant
3 Gravekeeper's Spy
1 Gravekeeper's Assailant
1 Sangan
Spells: 12
3 Necrovalley
3 Pot of Duality
2 Royal Tribute
2 Gravekeeper's Stele
1 Dark Hole
1 Book of Moon
Traps: 14
2 Bottomless Trap Hole
2 Torrential Tribute
2 Solemn Warning
2 Fiendish Chain
2 Compulsory Evacuation Device
1 Solemn Judgment
1 Mirror Force
1 Starlight Road
1 Dark Bribe

This looks very much like a more traditional Gravekeeper deck that was popular in formats past brought into this format. Unfortunately, Gravekeepers haven’t been able to keep up due to the speed of the meta. A lot of people think Gravekeepers are good again based on theory, and I have to agree. However, most people attempting the deck are trying old variations and I think it is time we put a new spin on an old deck.

I am going to go one of two directions that I have taken with Gravekeepers, both effective. One variation uses a lot of Malefics and Cardcar D. This version is more based on devastating the opponent as quickly as possible. That’s right, I am going to put some speed into a Gravekeeper deck. On the monster lineup, I cut Assailant because I feel as though it is not as useful in the current format. Most things have enough defense to weather the blow, and if they don’t they have a built in way to stop him. I also dropped Descendant to 2 since 3 is too much unless you are running Deck Devestation Virus or something, and I seriously recommend siding that card. Next I added 3 Tour Guides since you were already playing Sangan and they let you do some pretty cool things in this deck. I will get to some of the tricks later, but with Tour Guide catching Sangan and your 3 Recruiters, you are going to float like crazy. I also added Malefic Stardust Dragon because against a lot of decks, Necrovalley+Malefic Stardust can seal the game. I also added Malefic Cyber End Dragon because it packs such a huge punch. If you force your opponent to waste their resources on your Tour Guides and Gravekeepers, this card will finish your opponent off quite nicely.

So since I increased the amount of monsters being played, I had to cut Royal Tribute down to 1. It isn’t as good late game anyways, so I would rather just focus on killing them since Necrovalley and your other spell/traps will be doing enough controlling. Speaking of controlling, I added Enemy Controller. A lot of people would be confused as to why, but this card decision is based on experience. If you understand chains and how monsters leave the field, this card is amazing. For example, if your opponent plays Effect Veiler on Spy, Descendant, or Tour Guide, you can chain Enemy Controller to steal their monster and still get the effect. You play enough floaters to make this card good in general, but it also allows you to go for game more often. With your array of lv 3 and 4 monsters, XYZing with their monster shouldn’t be a problem. If you use it correctly, you should always gain card advantage with Enemy Controller in this deck. I added Allure because you have a higher chance of getting stuck on dead monsters now. I cut Gravekeeper’s Stele because I think it is way too slow for this format. The Gravekeepers’ are floaters as they are, they don’t need more recurrence.

For the trap lineup, I cut Dark Bribe because anything Dark Bribe does, Starlight Road does better in my opinion. I also dropped Compulsory Evacuation Device to 1. Though it is a good card, I don’t think it is ready to be played in multiples right now. There are still plenty of situations where it will just be a minus. I also cut Mirror Force since that card has become antiquated in this format. Dimensional Prison is much better, but I still feel like it is too slow. I also built an Extra Deck, so you can give that a look over but it just creates a toolbox. I wasn’t sure if I liked Gem Knight Pearl or Kachi Kochi Dragon better. It’s up to you I guess, and here’s the deck!

Hopefully you found that helpful not only as new decks to look at, but as a way to start to analyze your own deck. I hope that by writing these articles people will start to learn to become better deck builders in their own right and read it for that purpose, though there is nothing wrong with just checking out some cool decks. Like I said earlier, if you have a deck to submit, please do at deckdocktor@altereality.com. I will try to do these as regularly as possible and maybe even several per week. I still have quite a few decks to go through! If you have any comments or questions, please leave them and I’ll do my best to answer them!
