Hello Yugioh Community! In about a month the newest set Return of the Duelist is set to be released. Anytime a new set is about to come out it is always a good idea to look ahead and see what is coming! It’s smart to try and be a step ahead of everyone else! Today, I am here to help all of you duelist do just that! I am going to go over my favorite theme from Return of the Duelist, Geargia! These little Machines can really pack a nasty punch! Whether you decide you want to use them or not, they are definitely a force to look forward to see in action!
QUESTION OF THE ARTICLE: What are some of your favorite cards from Return of the Duelist?
Don’t forget to answer the question in the comments down below!
WHO ARE THE GEARGIA?
First, I want to show you all of the Geargia monsters that I feel are relevant and playable. After I am done going over each individual card I will discuss some of my favorite strategies with the deck!
Geargiarsenal
EARTH/MACHINE/LEVEL 4/1500/500
Effect: This card gains 200 ATK for each face-up "Geargia" monster you control. You can Tribute this card; Special Summon 1 "Geargia" monster from your Deck in face-up Defense Position, except "Geargiarsenal".
FIRST IMPRESSION: Right off the bat I could tell this theme was going to have potential just because of this one card. They have a Lonefire Blossom like effect monster who also has some pretty decent attack power. I like the Geargia already!
Geargiarmor
EARTH/MACHINE/LEVEL 4/1100/1900
Effect: Once per turn: You can change this card to face-down Defense Position. When this card is flipped face-up: You can add 1 "Geargia" monster from your Deck to your hand, except "Geargiarmor".
FIRST IMPRESSION: WOW! Not only do the Geargia have a Lonefire Blossom they also have a somewhat slowed down Elemental Hero Stratos. Whether you draw this card or bring it out with Geargiarsenal, it is going to be tough for your opponent to stop you from your free search or if they can’t get over the beefy 1900 defense, the free cards will start flowing!
Geargiaccelerator
EARTH/MACHINE/LEVEL 4/1400/800
Effect: If you control a "Geargia" monster, you can Special Summon this card (from your hand) in face-up Defense Position. When this card is sent from the field to the Graveyard: You can add 1 "Geargia" monster from your Graveyard to your hand, except "Geargiaccelerator".
FIRST IMPRESSION: This is obviously the card you want to search out with Geargiarmor’s effect. When a card with an effect as good as this one is the weak link in a theme, it is pretty easy to see there is something great that can come from the Geargia. He has a solid effect and will help make quick Rank 4 XYZ monsters. If only the Geargia had a good Rank 4 they could take advantage of……..
Gear Gigant X
EARTH/MACHINE/RANK 4/2300/1500
XYZ MONSTER – 2 Level 4 Machine-Type Monsters
Effect: Once per turn: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card; add 1 Level 4 or lower Machine-Type monster from your Deck or Graveyard to your hand. When this card leaves the field: You can target 1 Level 3 or lower "Geargia" monster in your Graveyard;Special Summon that target.
FIRST IMPRESSION: I must have saved the best for last because this guy is incredible. The fact you can search your deck OR Graveyard for ANY level 4 or lower machine-type monster(cough cough Machina Gearframe cough cough) just blows my mind! On top of his awesome first effect he even has an effect that triggers when he leaves the field. Unfortunately, I do not see myself playing any of the level 3 Geargia monsters, but they do have some decent effects so if you do fit them in Gear Gigant will have no problem bringing them back!
HOW THE DECK WORKS
In my opinion the best way to utilize these main three Geargia monsters and their unbelievably good XYZ monster is to splash them in a deck alongside the Machina theme. Gear Gigant X best target is Machina Gearframe hands down, he can search of the Machina Fortress or Machina Cannon if you already have Fortress in grave and want to bring him back. Some of you might be questioning the speed of this deck and without Ulitmate Offering how are you going to summon Gear Gigant X and the Machina Gearframe all in the same turn!? Well the answer is very simple, the Geargia!
The most basic and probably most powerful play in this deck is to simply flip summon Geargiarmor and if his effect resolves the pluses will soon begin. You use Geargiarmor’s effect to search your deck for a copy of Geargiaccelerator. You can then use his effect since Geargiarmor is face-up on the field to special summon Geargiaccelerator in defense mode to the field and now you have two face-up level 4 Machine type monsters that are ready to turn into a Gear Gigant X! You then use Gigant’s effect to search your deck for Machina Gearframe and normal summon him to search your deck for Fortress or Cannon. As far as advantage is concerned you have now turned your Geargiarmor into a field of Gear Gigant X, Machina Gearframe, and whatever you searched with Gearframe’s effect. That is a plus two overall cards and they are much stronger than the 1100 attack Geargiarmor you started the turn with! The fact that the deck also has a Lonefire Blossom (Geargiarsenal) with a decent attack to make this deck even more consistent is great! The amount of pluses in terms of card advantage this deck can create is amazing! You can even include a couple of sets of Gadgets in your deck and the pluses might never stop!
THE DOWNSIDE TO GEARGIA
While they are very good just from looking at them, there are a couple of cards that can really give this deck a difficult time and in some cases shut it down completely.
Chimeratech Fortress Dragon- This card has been the bane of all Machine duelists ever since it was released. While the Geargia tend to generate a lot of field advantage, for the most part all of those monsters are all Machine-type, and an Opponent’s timely Cyber Dragon can really set you back. Chimeratech can just end the game no matter how good things seemed to be going.
Thunder King Rai-Oh – This card’s popularity is probably the lowest it has been in awhile now, but I feel it is about to make a pretty strong comeback. This one card can shut down almost every single card in the Geargia deck. While you can stall out with Geargiarmor’s 1900 defense, you won’t be getting any searches, and if you special summon a Machina Fortress Thunder King will gladly negate his summon with his effect. If Geargia do not have the best of results at major events I would have to contribute 70 percent of the blame to this guy (The other 30 percent rightfully going to Chimeratch).
Conclusion: Return of the Duelist is set to be released on August 28th, 2012, just days before the first YCS of the new format in Toronto! As a top-level duelist you always need to be looking to the future and trying to stay one step ahead of the competition. Today, I went over my favorite theme from Return of the Duelist, The Geargia! While they have already released Geargia monster in Generation Force, he is not even close to being on the level of Geargiarsenal, Geargiarmor, Geargiaccelerator, and of course Gear Gigant X! This deck that can generate pluses every turn will definitely be a contender in the new format to come. As good as it is, every deck has it’s weaknesses that you need to look out for. Thunder King Rai-Oh and Chimeratech Fortress Dragon can really give this deck serious problems, but will the Geargia be able to overcome this and see success at YCS Toronto? For now we will just have to wait and see!
