Forbidden and Limited List Discussion with Billy Brake – Part 2

Hello Yugioh Community! I am back this week with Part 2 of my article series discussing the upcoming ban list! I’m going to go over what cards deserve to take place on the ban list to help decrease the power of some of the top decks and make the playing level a little more even. I do not know what the ban list is going to be so these are just suggestions of cards that might possibly be hit. In my opinion I would make sure you aren’t hanging on to too many copies of these cards or you might end up with a loss.

Before I go into the meat of the article I want to give everyone out there an update with what is going on with me in retrospect to the yugi-world. This upcoming weekend will be YCS Atlanta, the first YCS on American soil for the year 2012! I will be attending and trying to start the year off right with a top or even better a third win! So feel free to come up to me and say “Hello!” if you see me roaming around! Good luck to everyone who will be in attendance!

Question of the Article: What cards do you think deserve to be banned?

Don’t forget to answer the question of the article in the comments below!

What does it take for a card to be banned?
In my opinion if a card should be placed on the ban list, it must be detrimental to the game. Cards that go on the forbidden list should not be placed their just because they are annoying or a little powerful, but make yugioh unfair for all players. If you take a look at the list you can see the kind of cards that I am talking about. As new cards are released some old ones become too powerful like Card of Safe Return, Rescue Cat, Dark Strike Fighter, and Mass Driver. These cards weren’t great on their own, but because of cards that had been released they had poisoned the game and took away the fun factor. After taking these details into mind these are the cards that I have come up with that I feel should be forbidden.

Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning
Light/Warrior/LV 8/3000/2500
This card cannot be Normal Summoned or Set. This card can only be Special Summoned by removing from play 1 LIGHT and 1 DARK monster in your Graveyard. Once during each of your turns, you can select and activate 1 of the following effects:
● Select 1 monster on the field, and remove it from play. If you activate this effect, this card cannot attack during this turn.
● If this card destroyed your opponent's monster by battle, it can attack once again in a row.

This card has been on the ban list for years, but for some reason six months ago Konami decided to bring him back. That was a mistake. BLS is probably the most unfair card that has been in the game in awhile. It can be splashed into any deck that is using Effect Veiler and Tour Guide from the Underworld. Almost every time a player is able to drop him it is game. This card is great to open up with and even better to draw off the top. This card should have never came back and deserves to go right back to the forbidden list to never be heard from again.

Monster Reborn
Spell Card
Special Summon 1 monster from either player's Graveyard to your side of the field.
This card has been on and off the ban list more than any other card I can think of off the top of my head. It really doesn’t make sense to me why this card is around or ever has been. It is one of the most powerful spells ever created and is put into every single deck for this reason. With XYZand Synchro monsters it has become even more powerful than it used to be. Almost no matter what state the game is in, a top decked Monster Reborn can really turn the tables. This card can be unfair and cruel and will have player’s rage quitting for days. Even with cards like Destiny Hero – Disk Commander and Dark Magician of Chaos banned, Monster Reborn is still too powerful of a card to exist. There is no downside to this card. Monster Reborn is unhealthy for yugioh and should return right where it belongs on the forbidden list.

Trap Dustshoot
Trap Card
Activate only if your opponent has 4 or more cards in their hand. Look at your opponent's hand, select 1 Monster Card in it, and return that card to its owner's Deck.

A few years ago this card was unrestricted and almost every yugioh player out there played three copies of this card in their deck. Luckily, it was recognized how unfair this card was and it was restricted to one. Then Heavy Storm was banned and players began to set every card they drew to their back row and punishment was very rare. With player’s not holding cards in their hand Trap Dustshoots playability shrank immensely. With the last ban list however, Heavy Storm returned and so did Dustshoot into most player’s decks. If a player goes first and opens up with this card the game is almost always sealed. I can’t think of another turn one card that is anywhere near as powerful as this in the game right now. I can tell it is a problem because when I test play with Yugioh Super Star Jeff Jones and one of us draws this card we take it and put it back into the deck and draw another card because of how unfair it is. This card can not only take away whatever power monster or play that you have, it gives knowledge to the opponent that is quite valuable. This is one of the most unfair cards in Yugioh right now and I feel it deserves a spot on the forbidden list.

Pot of Avarice
Spell Card
Select 5 Monster Cards in your Graveyard. Shuffle those cards into the Deck, then draw 2 cards.
Many decks in the game right now have a fairly easy time dumping five monsters into their grave rather quixkly. If Wind-Ups draw this card they have a chance to discard your hand, Plants have been abusing this card for quite some time now, Rabbit can abuse it to reuse their normal monsters, and that’s just a few of the top decks to name that can abuse it easily. A lot of decks use copies of Tour Guide From the Underworld and just one copy of that card in any deck already gets three monsters in your grave, you are already over half way to a live Pot of Avarice. This card is similar to Monster Reborn in the sense that a top decked one of these and no matter the game state the tables can turn quite quickly. This is probably the second most powerful spell in the game, only second to Monster Reborn, and should go away. Drawing has always been a huge aspect of the game and this card will let you put back all your XYZ and Synchro monsters to be used again and you get to draw two fresh cards. This card can be pretty unfair in many powerful decks and if it is banned I feel it will take them all down a notch. I believe that Pot of Avarice’s time is up and will take its place on the forbidden list.

Conclusion: It takes a lot for a card to get placed on the Forbidden List. Only cards that are unfair and detrimental to the game should be placed on the list. In Yugioh right now I feel that Monster Reborn, Trap Dustshoot, and Pot of Avarice belong on that list. All three of these cards are over powerful and unfair to the player’s who are on the receiving end of them. In my opinion, if these cards were to go away it would make Yugioh a better game and much more skillful.
