Preparing for Lord of the Tachyon Galaxy: Harpies

In Just a few months, the Harpie cards that almost everyone has been talking about will be released, but will they live up to their hype? In this article, I plan to delve into the Harpie archetype and give my insight on how I feel they will do in the near future.

Before we become too attached to this article, let me introduce you to the new Harpie support that will be released:

Harpie's Pet Mirage Dragon
Rank 4 WIND
Dragon/XYZ/Effect
3 Level 4 WIND monsters
This card's effects can only be applied/resolved while it has Xyz Material. This card can attack your opponent directly. While this card is on the field, your opponent cannot select "Harpie" Monsters as targets for an attack or card effect, except "Harpie's Brother". During each of your End Phases: Detach 1 Xyz Material from this card.
ATK/2000 DEF/2500

Comments: This card is pretty powerful, but won't be summoned too much. Its ability to attack directly is what makes it so darn good. It also helps that it can't be Dimensional Prisoned or Compulsory Evacuation Deviced.

Lightning Plover
Rank 4 WIND
2 Level 4 WIND monsters
When this card is Xyz Summoned: Target 1 Set card your opponent controls; return it to the bottom of the Deck. Once per turn: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card to target 1 face-up card your opponent controls; return it to the top of the Deck.
ATK/1900 DEF/1600

Comments: This card is absolutely amazing. It is always going to be a one for one, but in most cases it will be much more than that. You can lock your opponent's top deck and really get them stuck. This card is very similar to Raiza in previous formats.

Harpie Chaneller
LV 4 WIND
Winged Beast/Effect
You can discard 1 "Harpie" card, except "Harpie's Brother"; Special Summon 1 "Harpie" monster from your Deck in face-up Defense Position, except "Harpie Channeler" or "Harpie's Brother". You can only use this effect of "Harpie Channeler" once per turn. If you control a Dragon-Type Monster, this card's Level becomes 7. The card's name is treated as "Harpie Lady" while it is on the field or in the Graveyard.

Comments: This is the card that really makes Harpies a solid deck. You can ditch any Harpie card and instantly make a Rank 4 XYZ or Rank 7 XYZ, or maybe even just get enough on board to attack for game. Regardless, this card certainly does provide one of the most effortless ways to summon yourself a Big Eye from your extra deck, and we all know how game changing that card is!

Hysteric Sign
Continuos Spell
When this card is activated, add 1 "Elegant Egotist" from your deck or Graveyard to your hand. During the End Phase of the turn this card was sent from your hand or your field to the Graveyard, add up to 3 "Harpie" Cards with different names from your deck to your hand. The effect of "Hysteric Sign" can only be used once per turn.

Comments: This card It pretty darn good. First of all, it grabs Elegant Egotist, which on its own is a pretty solid card in the Harpie deck. I see a lot of potential in this card. You can set it early game along with a trap or two in order to bait out your opponent's spell and trap removal and if they happen to destroy Hysteric Sign, then you got yourself a +1. Sure you don't get the Elegant Egotist, but that is going to be one of the only ways that you can actually get your opponent to destroy it. Keep in mind that you can also discard this card and trigger its effect. I see some cool combos with Summoner Monk and Hysteric Party! This is a card that will certainly give Harpies the chance they never had. I'm sure Mai Valentine would be proud.

So those are the new Harpie Support cards coming out in the Lord of the Tachyon Galaxy set. As you can see, they are some good support cards, and with some already solid Harpie cards in the game right now, this deck can become a true powerhouse!

Now let's get into the past themed Harpie support that some of you probably haven't seen in a while or even at all:

Birdface
LV 4 WIND
Winged Beast/Effect
When this card is sent to the Graveyard as a result of battle, you can add 1 "Harpie Lady" from your Deck to your hand. Then shuffle your Deck.

Winged Beast/Effect
This card's name is treated as "Harpie Lady".

ATK/500 DEF/500

Harpie Lady
LV4 WIND
Winged Beast
ATK/1300 DEF/1400

Harpie Lady 1
LV4 WIND
Winged Beast/Effect
This card's name is always treated as "Harpie Lady". All WIND monsters gain 300 ATK.
ATK/1300 DEF/1400

ATK/1300 DEF/1400

Harpie Lady Sisters
LV6 WIND
Winged Beast/Effect
This card cannot be Normal Summoned or Set. This card can only be Special Summoned by the effect of "Elegant Egotist".
ATK/1950 DEF/2100

Harpie Queen
LV4 WIND
Winged Beast/Effect
You can discard this card to the Graveyard to add 1 "Harpies' Hunting Ground" from your Deck to your hand. This card's name is treated as "Harpie Lady" while it is on the field or in the Graveyard.
ATK/1900 DEF/1200

Harpie's Pet Baby Dragon
LV4 WIND
Dragon/Effect
This card gains effects based on the number of "Harpie" monsters you control (other than "Harpie's Pet Baby Dragon" and "Harpie's Brother"). ● 1+: Your opponent cannot select "Harpie" monsters you control as attack targets (except "Harpie's Pet Baby Dragon" and "Harpie's Brother"). ● 2+: Double the original ATK and DEF of this card. ● 3+: Once per turn, you can destroy 1 card your opponent controls.
ATK/1200 DEF/600

Harpie's Pet Dragon
LV7 WIND
Dragon/Effect
This card gains 300 ATK and DEF for each "Harpie Lady" on the field
ATK/2000 DEF/2500

Cyber Shield
Equip Spell
Equip only to "Harpie Lady" or "Harpie Lady Sisters". It gains 500 ATK.

Elegant Egotist
Normal Spell
You can only activate this card when there are 1 or more face-up "Harpie Lady" on the field. Special Summon 1 "Harpie Lady" or "Harpie Lady Sisters" from your hand or Deck.

Harpie's Hunting Ground
Field Spell
When "Harpie Lady" or "Harpie Lady Sisters" is Normal Summoned or Special Summoned, destroy 1 Spell or Trap Card on the field. All face-up Winged Beast-Type monsters gain 200 ATK and DEF.

Triangle Ecstacy Spark
Normal Spell
Until the End Phase of this turn, the ATK of all "Harpie Lady Sisters" becomes 2700, your opponent cannot activate any Trap Cards, and the effect of every Trap Card on your opponent's side of the field is negated.

Hysteric Party
Discard 1 card from your hand. Special Summon as many "Harpie Lady" cards as possible from your Graveyard. When this card is removed from the field, destroy all the monsters that were Special Summoned by this card's effect.

Some of these cards are pretty busted, while some are just complete garbage. Keep in mind that any card that has the effect, "This card's name is treated as "Harpie Lady".", also means that you can actually only use 3 Harpie Ladies total. Cards like Harpie Queen and Harpie Channeler forego this rule because they aren't always considered Harpie Lady.

Non-themed Harpie Support

Rescue Rabbit

We all know what Resuce Rabbit does. Rescue Rabbit would be a very consistent way to drop a Lightning Plover from the extra deck. Plover is definitely powerful enough to warrant Rescue Rabbit's spot in the deck!

Summoner Monk

I have strongly considered Summoner Monk card for the Harpie deck. While it cannot search out Rescue Rabbit, it can however search out a channeler

Here is a cool combo that you can do with a single summoner monk.

Summoner Monk > Pitch Spell > Summoner Monk > Pitch Spell > Chaneller > Pitch Harpie > Harpie's Pet Dragon

You can then overlay Harpie's Pet Dragon and Chaneller to make Big Eye and detach Harpies pet dragon to take their monster. Next you can overlay the 2 monks to make Queen Dragun Djinn and special summon Harpies pet dragon back!

Monk also opens up some other neat plays for the deck. With a hunting ground on board, it can turn monk into a pretty cool toolbox. You can destroy a lot of back rows and special summon a lot of xyz. Easy Shock Masters are always nice!

Swallow's Nest
Normal Spell
Tribute 1 face-up Winged Beast-Type monster you control to Special Summon 1 Winged Beast-Type monster from the Deck with the same Level as the Tributed monster.

While this card doesn't necessarily do much for the deck, it is a pretty neat card and I think it deserves some recognition. You can chain this card to cards like Bottomless Trap Hole or even Dimensional Prison and protect your monster from being removed. It also combos well with Hunting Ground as a form of mass spell/trap removal. Overall, I would say Icarus Attack is a lot better, though.

Icarus Attack
Normal Trap
Tribute 1 Winged Beast-Type monster to target 2 cards on the field; destroy them.

This card hasn't seen play in quite a while. It used to be one of the best trap cards in the Blackwing deck, and not much will change for its place in the Harpie deck.

Now that we have became familiar with all of the Harpie cards and all of their support, it would only be proper to get into a deck list.

Here is my current Harpie Rabbit deck.

3x Harpie Lady
3x Sabersaurus

The cool thing about this deck is that it acts a lot like Dino Rabbit, but also gets to perfectly utilize the Harpie engine!

Harpie Lady works great in conjunction with Rescue Rabbit to make a quick Lightning Plover, and with the added bonus of Sabersaurus', you get the ability to make Laggias and Dolkkas without much effort at all!

The deck has been testing rather well and I think it has a lot of potential for the near future.

The Verdict: Harpie will be a solid Tier 2 deck.

Stay tuned for next weeks video article, where I will be both dueling (with the Harpie Rabbit deck) and commentating on a duel versus a fellow ARG member!
